The ribbon, that is. For more than a year I’ve been dreaming about it…but I was never quite certain how on earth we were going to actually construct it.

But that worry’s now gone—thanks to the generosity (and expertise) of Tracy Ruff of Kine Vue, LLC. Yesterday, Tracy sent me a layout of the site showing exact measurements and the precise placement of each of our 400 participants and their umbrellas. It’s awesome.

And, let me tell you, this AIDS memorial ribbon is going to be big—nearly 200 feet long, nearly 100 feet wide. Big. And beautiful.

I’m starting to see it.

And, I hope you’ll be there to see it with me on December 1st.

On World AIDS Day 2011, Fan Free Clinic will bring together 400 community leaders and volunteers on Brown’s Island in Richmond, Virginia. With the city skyline as backdrop, participants—each holding a single red umbrella—will assemble to form an AIDS memorial ribbon. They will be gathering to remember those lost tomorrow to HIV/AIDS.

Fan Free Clinic is leading this memorial effort in order to shine a spotlight on the ongoing AIDS epidemic in Richmond and throughout the Commonwealth. Virginia ranks 11th among all U.S. states and territories in terms of the number of cumulative AIDS diagnoses; approximately 21,000 Virginians are living with HIV/AIDS.

More information coming soon.
